“My art is an appreciation of life, imagination, and a celebration of whom and what I am.
I paint what I see: my town, my family, small snippets of my life.”-Minjin Kung

Statement about my Painting
I’ve been a New Yorker since I immigrated from South Korea more than 45 years ago. Every time I visit the city now, I'm brought back to old memories of my high school years when I used to commute from Queens to Manhattan every day. This painting of New York City was inspired by those old memories of waiting.
I wasn’t born here, but I'm proud to say that this is my country.
The folk song by Don Raye and Al Jacobs, “This is My Country,” captures my sentiments well:
THIS IS MY COUNTRY
What difference if I hail from North or South
Or from the East or West?
My heart is filled with love for all of these
I only know I swell with pride and deep within my breast
I thrill to see Old Glory paint the breeze
This is my country! Land of my choice!
This is my country! Hear my proud voice!
I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold
For this is my country, to have and to hold
I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold
For this is my country, to have... and to hold

"Whenever I've gone outdoors to paint there is this heightened perceptiveness afterwards. This being at one with everything - the air is fresher and the sky is glorious. It's a thrill to be alive - and being a painter makes you the luckiest of men."

Life of a wanderer
From north to south, east to west, city to city, country to country, traveling as an adventurer and drifting with the times, we find ourselves as outsiders, but we keep going until our last breaths because our home is not here.
Acrylic Paint 20” x 14 “
Our 400 years old oak tree behind the house, which has come to represent so much to me. This tree, stretching its long arms over our house and across neighbors’ yards, this tree had seen it all. It welcomed New York’s first Dutch settlers centuries ago, as it so similarly welcomed me decades ago. And it has also watched generations pass away, in the same way I too will flicker by in my momentary life. And yet, this tree, these mountains and valleys and rivers—they are the true inhabitants of this land. I am merely a passing guest. This artwork is my tribute to that eternal beauty and nature of the Hudson Valley.
From study of the human figures, to gesture sketches thence to paintings, these are my reflection of my passion for the Art.

I enjoy painting my family, and the faces of loved ones also strangers are all inspiration. I started oil painting at High School of Art and Design in New York City under Irwin Greenberg, and Max Ginsburg couple of America’s foremost illustrators and painter.
During time at Art and Design Greenberg along with painter Max Ginsberg ran an early morning painting group where students came voluntarily to paint from a model. The teachers worked alongside of the students and also made their rounds instructing each one.
The group was duped the “Old Hats Club” by some other instructor because it concentrated on drawing and painting from the model in a traditional, classical vein which was out of vogue from the time they started the group and beyond the time I attended late 1970's.
I was fortunate enough to have had them as a teacher at the High School of Art & Design. —as students knowing them—was a true inspiration

Happy Mother's Day!
This is my mother's portrait. She's 83 years old and an amazing woman. She was a Nursing Officer(간호장교) during the time of Korean War. She and her colleagues were the first generation to serve the Korean army as women.
In 1972, my parents took their four children, aged 9-12, with just six large suitcases and moved to United States. They worked hard to provide us a home, education, and more. Throughout all of this, my mother has been a person of prayer, a pioneer, a decision maker, and a wise woman. I can talk about her for hours...
I'm here today because of my mom and dad.
I want to say "THANK YOU" to all the mothers in the world and "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!"

Watercolors are an honest art form; it does not allow for lies with its' transparency, and I continue to return to them because of this.

DEMO Life Drawing, Conte Crayon..by MINJIN.KUNG.COM
Life drawing, also known as figure drawing, is the act of drawing a living person. Normally this means drawing a nude model in real life – i.e. not from a photograph or from memory or imagination.
God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.
